So, How About That ‘Spider-Woman #1′ Cover, Eh?

I didn’t even know who Jessica Drew was before this week. (Don’t be judgmental, I’m a DC fangirl.) To be honest, I still don’t know who she is; but it seems she’s got the most popular bum in all of comics at the moment.

Remember when Marvel announced its initiative to have more female lead books? I bet this isn’t the kind of start you imagined.

As for the body paint… Oh, that’s an actual suit, you say? Couldn’t possibly be a suit. Though perhaps she had a little design help from Spider-Man and it’s a super thin polymer that has heavy skin weave fibers coursing throughout that allow for a sort of ablative exoskeleton. Yea. Let’s go with that.

That variant was released by Comic Book Resources, from the November solicits. I’ll go ahead and note that this is a variant cover. The actual cover looks like this:

Given Milo Manara’s past work (thanks to The Mary Sue for pointing it out), his positioning of Jessica Drew doesn’t come as a surprise. After all, no one reads erotica comics for the articles; it’s not classy like Playboy.

And please, spare me your comments on men superheros in spandex. They’re all drawn with codpieces. When it gets to the point where we see actual definition instead of a bulge, then we’ll be comparing apples to apples.

Want to know what Marvel has to say about the cover? Check out this quote from CBR.

“I think that the people who are upset about that cover have a point, at least in how the image relates to them. By that same token, Milo Manara has been working as a cartoonist since 1969, and what he does hasn’t materially changed in all that time. So when we say ‘Manara cover,’ his body of work indicates what sort of thing he’s going to do.”

At least in how the image relates to them? Yea, I can see where you’re coming from if you’re not a fan of in-yo-face-ass. Way to marginalize those who are (rightfully) upset about the cover, Mr. Tom Brevoort — Marvel SVP of Publishing. AND, if you really are trying to attract new female readers, why not pick an artist who DOES NOT have a reputation like Manara?

In the meantime, enjoy this armor clad Thor that will be hitting shelves in October. Let’s hope we get more of this in Marvel’s female driven titles and less pornstar.

Her ultimate goals include traveling the world to watch tennis and working for BioWare to revive the essence of the original Mass Effect Trilogy.
